This procedure does not take place in a medical office; the second stage usually happens at home. Side effects may include heavy bleeding, cramping, nausea, fever, chills, or diarrhea. It’s essential to follow up with a doctor after a medical abortion to make sure the procedure is complete and no tissue remains in the uterus. Incomplete abortions can lead to infection or require a surgical abortion to resolve.
Aspiration Abortion (Up to 13 Weeks)
Also called suction abortion or vacuum aspiration, this in-clinic procedure is used during the first trimester of pregnancy [3]. It involves inserting a small tube into the uterus to remove the pregnancy using gentle suction. Local anesthesia is typically used, and the procedure takes about 5–10 minutes.
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) – Second Trimester Abortion
If you are in your second trimester of pregnancy (typically 13 weeks and beyond), a Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) procedure may be used [4]. This is a more complex form of surgical abortion that involves dilating the cervix and removing the pregnancy using medical instruments and suction.
D&E procedures require more preparation and are typically performed in clinical or hospital settings. Risks may increase with gestational age, which is why it’s critical to seek timely medical consultation.
